  1. An owner must obtain the written approval of the Strata Corporation before making an alteration to a strata lot that involves any of the following:
    1. doors, windows, window coverings affecting the exterior appearance of the building
or skylights … on the exterior of a building, or that front on the common property.

  • Venetian (Cordless)
  • Vertical Patio Blinds
  • Café Curtains Behind Blinds (white, off-white or translucent)
  • Motorized Blinds

Not Allowed or Avoid

  • Roller Blinds
  • Pleated Blinds
  • Reflective foil coverings
  • Temporary coverings (cardboard, plastic, paper)

Key Takeaways

  1. Exterior-facing window coverings should appear white or neutral from outside.
  2. Existing older blinds with pull strings do not need to be replaced.
  3. New blinds must comply with Corded Window Coverings Regulations (SOR/2019-97)
from Health Canada as of 2021.
  4. 2-inch-wide horizontal slats are common for Venetian blinds; faux wood is a popular louvre material;
thin metal slats are not recommended as they bend and kink easily.
  5. Motorized, vertical patio, and cordless Venetian blinds are safe and allowed.
  6. Avoid roller blinds, pleated blinds, reflective foil, dark blackout blinds pressed to glass,
and temporary coverings (cardboard, plastic, paper).

Procedure

  1. Contact Property Manager to obtain an Indemnity Agreement to Change Window Coverings.
  2. Return filled out and signed form to Property Manager for review and approval by council.
